Most people in the US have HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system installed in their houses. The system keeps the houses warm during winters and cool during summers. Not many people know about the HVAC system components, which makes it difficult for them to maintain the system and keep the cost of repairs down.

Here we will reveal to you the mystery of HVAC system components. When you know about the HVAC components and parts, it will make it easy for you to keep the system maintained for optimum efficiency.

The Furnace

The furnace provides and circulates warm air inside the house via ducts and vents. If the furnace is connects to you A/C, it also distributes cool air inside the house. The furnace may be located in the attic, basement, utility room, laundry room, or a closet. It is the main heating system in most houses that do not uses boiler system, heat pump, solar heating, or other heating system.

Heat Exchanger

The heat Exchanger is located inside the furnace. This is the place where the air is heated before being pushed into the duct system to warm the house. A fan pulls outside cold air into the furnace. The cold air passes through the burners before reaching the heat exchanger that warms the air.

The Evaporator Coil

An evaporator coil is usually attached to the furnace. It can also be part of a dedicated air handler. The evaporator coil contains refrigerant that cools down the hot air. This cool air is then distributed to the vents and ducts with a blower fan, which is located either in the furnace or air handler.

The Compressor / Condenser

The compressor / condenser is a part of HVAC system. It is located outside the house in a metal box and contain a compressor, condensing coil, and a fan. Here the refrigerant gas is compressed, turned into a liquid, and then pumped into the house. During this process, warm air that was absorbed from inside the house is expelled outside, while cool air is circulated inside the house.

The Thermostat

The thermostat is an important part of the HVAC system that regulates the temperature inside the house. Once you set the thermostat to a particular temperature, it will maintain that temperature inside the house. If you install a programmable thermostat, you can set the temperature to adjust automatically during different time periods.

HVAC Ducts & Vents

Finally, the ducts are the veins of HVAC system that distributes air to different parts of the house through vents. There are two types of ducts and vents. Supply ducts deliver cool or warm air to the rooms from the furnace. While the return ducts and vents return the air inside the house, back to the furnace or air handler.
