If doing laundry feels like a never-ending chore, that’s because it is—the average American family now runs upwards of 400 loads of laundry per year. That’s more than one load a day! Even if you’re not doing quite that much laundry, you don’t have to do the exact math to know that all that energy consumption adds up. The good news is that it’s not hard to cut your monthly energy bill simply by adopting some easy energy-saving tips while doing your laundry.
Use cold water – Most of the cost of running a load of laundry comes from the energy needed to heat the water. Cold water is a perfectly acceptable way to wash most items of clothing, so unless a particular garment requires a hot water cycle for some reason, make cold water your default setting.
Run full loads – To be efficient with your laundry, avoid running loads with only a couple items in them. It takes as much energy to run a full load as an almost empty one, so hold off until you’ve acquired enough dirty laundry to fill a whole load. If it is necessary to run a small load, make sure to use the water-saving small load setting.
Upgrade your equipment – When it comes time to replace your machines, choose an Energy Star-certified energy-efficient model to save over 8 gallons of water per load. Buying a front-loading washer rather than a top-loading model can also reduce both water and heating costs.
Air dry – Many fabrics are recommended to be air-dried anyway, and air drying your laundry rather than using your dryer will significantly cut your energy use. If the weather outside isn’t warm or dry enough, you can always use a freestanding indoor drying rack.
Keep it warm – Believe it or not, where your washer and dryer are located in your house can effect how much energy they consume. The warmer the environment your washer and dryer occupy the less energy it takes for them to warm up for each load. If you have a choice, install machines on the first or second floor rather than in a cold basement.
Clean ducts and filters – Removing lint from the lint screen after every load and inspecting the dryer vent periodically to ensure the ducts are clear will help your dryer save energy by running more efficiently. Every few months, use the long nozzle attachment on your vacuum to remove link that collects below the lint screen in your dryer.
Appliances also operate more efficiently when they receive regular maintenance. Bonfe’s appliance technicians can handle all your laundry machine repair or replacement needs.
