Act Fast! Home Upgrade Tax Credits Ending Sooner Than Planned.

When you hear “IRA,” you might think about retirement funds, but there’s another meaning:

IRA also stands for Inflation Reduction Act, and it includes a tax credit program that can save you big time on qualifying home upgrades. The money you save could be invested in the other type of IRA if you want, but only if you act fast!

If you’ve been considering an upgrade to your home’s heating, cooling, plumbing, or electrical systems, time is running out faster than you might think. The IRA tax credit program, initially set to run through 2033, has been significantly shortened and will now end very soon.

Here’s what you need to know about these deadlines.

IRA Tax Credit Deadlines Are Fast Approaching

The timeline for claiming federal HVAC tax credits and other home upgrade incentives has been cut down substantially:

EV Charger Installation Credits Ends September 30, 2025

All Other IRA Tax Credits: Ends December 31, 2025

We’re spreading the word because many folks heard about the original 2033 date but aren’t aware that it has changed. We don’t want you to miss out!

With the new legislation that has been passed, the window for these valuable incentives is closing rapidly.

Which Home Upgrades Still Qualify for IRA Tax Credits?

Several types of home improvements are eligible for federal tax credits, but only if completed before the deadlines. These include:

  • Heat Pump Systems: Up to $2,000 in tax credits for these highly efficient, dual-function heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps move air rather than generating it from scratch and leave a lower carbon footprint since they don’t rely on fossil fuel combustion.
  • Water Heaters: Traditional and tankless water heaters are eligible for up to $600 in IRA tax credits, while heat pump water heaters qualify for up to $2,000.

EV Charger Installation: Until September 30, 2025, EV charger installations are eligible for up to $1,000 in tax credits.

Understanding Annual Limits for IRA Tax Credits

You can receive up to $3,200 in eligible IRA tax credits each year. Since this is the last year of the program, that’s your limit if you’re just getting started.

There is a $2,000 maximum total annual credit for heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, and an additional $1,200 maximum total annual credit for furnaces, boilers, central air conditioners, traditional or tankless water heaters, and electric panel upgrades. You can combine projects from these two categories for a total maximum annual credit of $3,200.

Already made some upgrades and received tax credits in previous years? The credits have no lifetime dollar limits. That means homeowners may claim the maximum annual credit every year that eligible improvements are made, through the program deadline.

How to Claim IRA Home Upgrade Tax Credits

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service manages these credits, and the credits can be claimed with your federal income taxes for the year in which the upgrades are made.

To claim the credit, file Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits Part II, with your tax return. You must claim the credit for the tax year when the equipment is installed, not when it was purchased.

Note: As of 2025, the IRS requires manufacturers to establish a PIN for each eligible product to associate it with the tax credit claim. For installations in 2025, include the manufacturer’s four-digit QM code on your tax return.

Heat Pump Tax Credit Eligibility for 2025

We’d argue that heat pumps are one of the most valuable opportunities for federal HVAC tax credit savings. These systems qualify for the highest individual credit amount of up to $2,000, and they provide both heating and cooling efficiency.

Heads up—heat pump tax credit eligibility requires that systems meet specific efficiency standards and be properly installed in qualifying homes. Make sure you use a trusted expert (like our technicians at Bonfe!) who can help ensure your heat pump meets all requirements for claiming the credit.

Tax Credits are Only One Reason to Upgrade!

Worried that you’ll miss the deadline? Even if you don’t get around to making upgrades before the tax credit program expires, it’s still worth looking into upgrades. And if you do hit the deadline, it’s a win-win (with several more “wins” added in there!). Why? Because efficient systems can offer a laundry list of benefits, such as:

  • Increased Comfort: Enjoy consistent temperature control and reliable performance. No more breakdowns at the most inconvenient times! (Isn’t that when they always seem to happen?)
  • Savings on Your Bills: Efficient systems reduce monthly energy bills!
  • Higher Property Value: Updated systems can make homes more attractive to buyers.
  • Environmental Impact: Friendlier for your family and the environment! Reduce your carbon footprint with sustainable upgrades.

Don't Wait!

To take advantage of the tax credits before they expire, schedule an appointment now. (We mean it—now that you’ve read this, schedule immediately while it’s top of mind!)

Whether you’re interested in heat pump installation, water heater upgrades, or EV charger installation, the timing is critical.

Our team at Bonfe is well aware of the urgency of these approaching deadlines and can help you navigate the process to maximize your IRA savings. We’ll help ensure your installation meets all requirements for claiming tax credits and provide the documentation needed for your tax return.
