Making an intention to start saving energy doesn’t mean you have to make a large, costly change like installing new energy-efficient appliances. Energy savings can start as small as making changes to your daily habits—but you’d be surprised how quickly they can add up. For example, turning the TV off when you’re ready for bed instead of falling asleep with it on can save up to $55/year! Here are five easy ways you can start saving energy today.
1. Unplug electronic devices when not in use. This goes for laptops, phones, TVs—anything that still consumes “vampire power” while in standby mode. Energy consumed in standby mode accounts for 10% of average total household use!
2. Install curtains. During the summer, they’ll keep your rooms cooler; during the winter, they’ll minimize heat loss through the windows. Curtains provide year-round temperature control that helps your heating and cooling systems catch a break.
3. Learn how to use ceiling fans properly. Most people don’t know how to use their ceiling fans correctly. If you’re not in the room, they do nothing. If the blades are facing the wrong way, they’re ineffective. In the winter, blades pointing up will disperse warm air collected on the ceiling. In the summer, blades pointing down will generate a current of cool air.
4. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. You’d think this one would be a no-brainer, but it bears repeating. Leaving lights on in an empty room is a waste of energy, plain and simple.
5. Keep windows and doors sealed. If you’re running your heating or cooling system, keep windows and doors closed. If you’re using the energy to generate warm or cool air inside your house, you want to make sure it stays there.
